Behind the ocean floor poster maps above lies an amazing discovery. Did you know that the idea of continental drift -- the notion that the continents were in a state of motion across the surface of the world -- was dismissed by most scientists until well into the last half of the 20th century?

Although there was evidence that the bottom parts of South America and Africa had once been joined together because the rocks and fossils are very similar, scientists believed this was mere coincidence because they could envisage no mechanism that could explain such movement. To scientists' great surprise these maps and studies revealed that the ocean floor was made of different material from the continents -- basically that it was relatively fresh volcanic rock.
