Behind the sea turtles poster above lies an amazing creature, the sea turtle itself. When the sea turtle is underwater it swims with such grace of movement, seeming to glide almost on outstretched wings through the clear waters of tropical and sub-tropical waters. I have been fortunate enough to witness this swimming viewed from under the surface and there is a sleekness and simplicty to the turtle's movement that belies its ungainly movement on land.

For on land the sea turtle moves with an exaggerated, laboured shifting of its shell along in jerky movements.. This is of course because it is so supremely adapted to life in the sea, which is why it emerges onto our beaches only when necessary, which in practise means to lay its eggs. The sea turtle must lay its eggs on land because it has evolved from land animals. It is closely related to the land turtle or terrapin and of course the tortoise. This affinity can be seen not only in its shell and general body form, but also in the shape and design of its head.
